Recent research has shown the importance of the first 1000 days of life on the developing brain. The experiences of early childhood affect brain architecture, affecting ability and outcome for a lifetime. Early childhood experience also can affect epigenetic changes, raising the possibility of passing favorable or unfavorable changes to offspring. Adverse childhood experiences have been shown to have lifelong effects on health and economic outcome. Communication of the science behind these relatively new findings to policy makers is essential if we are to make progress. Early Brain and Child Development, therefore, remains a strategic priority.
