WIAAP Against Expanded Scope of Practice for Pharmacists

WIAAP urged a veto of a provision in the proposed Wisconsin budget expanding scope of practice for pharmacists administering any immunizations to children under the age of 6.  Jim Conway, chair of the Immunization and Infectious Disease committee, cautioned that training, accountability and reporting are key to the preservation of the medical home.  WIAAP endorsed expansion to administering influenza vaccine only, and under condition that those immunizations be recorded in the state registry.

BadgerCare and Proposed 2011-2013 Wisconsin Budget
WIAAP distributed a plea to key lawmakers, including Governor Walker, to urge them to reconsider the far-reaching cuts in BadgerCare as well as the changes in governance for the Secretary of the State of Wisconsin Department of Health Services.

The best place to have your voice heard regarding protecting children in any changes to Medicaid or Badgercare is to participate in the public forums coming up on the Governor's Budget.  The dates are published here (scroll to the bottom of the page): http://legis.wisconsin.gov/lfb/jfc/schedule.htm

Raw Milk

WIAAP rises against pending legislation in both houses that would legalize the sale of 'raw milk,' citing scientific evidence of health risks.

Access to Immunizations

WIAAP signed on to the 317 Coalition's  letter to Secretary of of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Kathleen Sebelius appealing for increased funding for the CDC National  Immunization Program, commonly known as the "Section 317 Program."

"As organizations committed to protecting the health of children, adolescents and adults, we recommend increasing federal funding for the CDC national immunization program, commonly known as the 'Section 317 Program.' Specifically, we urge you to allocate an increase of $100 million in Fiscal Year 2011 and $200 million in Fiscal Year 2012 funds from the Affordable Care Act's Prevention and Public Health Fund as specifically referenced in statute (section 4002(c)) as an authorized use of funds."

PAMTA

On March 9, 2011, the Preservation of Antibiotics for Medical Treatment Act (PAMTA, H.R. 965) was reintroduced for the 112th Congress in the House by Congresswoman Louise Slaughter (D-NY).  The substantive text of the bill is unchanged; Congresswoman Slaughter only changed the "findings" section of PAMTA (the section that lays out the case for the bill's statutory provisions) to reflect key science and policy developments since the bill was last introduced two years ago.  PAMTA advocates the end of the overuse of nontherapeutic antibiotics in animal agriculture.

The list of endorsers for PAMTA, including WIAAP, now comprises over 377 organizations.
